Why The Elder Scrolls 6 Might Release Later Than We Think
Bethesda has been back in the news now more than ever – what with the confirmed release date for Starfield, 11-11-22 by the way, and the announcement of their new partnership with Lucasfilm and Disney to bring about a new Indiana Jones title, so it’s really no surprise that some journalists have been asking more questions about the highly anticipated Elder Scrolls 6. In those recent interviews Todd Howard, has been, well he’s been Todd Howard – dodging around questions and giving those patented non-answers that we all know and love, but mixed in between those “Todd-isms” have been some interesting details!
Earlier this week we asked you what year you thought The Elder Scrolls 6 might be released in with the options of 2024, 2025, 2026, 2027 or 2077 – little cheeky there, sorry.
Most of the serious answers seemed to guess around 2024 or 2025 which seems to be pretty reasonable especially given the most recent statements by Todd Howard. These come from an article by the Telegraph where Todd is speaking more specifically about Creation Engine 2. He says:
“It’s good to think of The Elder Scrolls 6 as still being in a design [phase]… we’re checking the tech (Creation Engine 2): ‘Is this going to handle the things we want to do in that game?’
That game being the Elder Scrolls 6. This is really interesting to me because if you think of Elder Scrolls 6 as being in the “design phase” still you can look at other Bethesda titles and compare when they entered that design phase and then saw a release and possibly apply to this next major Elder Scrolls entry.
Starfield will eventually be our most recent example of a Bethesda title being developed from start to finish. It has a set release date of 11-11-22 but we also know roughly when the development of starfield really took off based on other earlier interviews, plus Starfield and the Elder Scrolls 6 will be using the same engine – Creation Engine 2 which we could potentially mean that both games might have a similar development timeline.
Todd goes on to talk more about Creation Engine 2 in the Telegraph article mentioning:
The [new Starfield] technology, Creation Engine 2, is sort of built for both. It’s like a new tech base. The vast majority of our development development work is on Starfield right now but everybody works on everything so the projects kind of intertwine.
We know that starfield is a bit on an enigma when it comes to bethesda titles – it’s the first new IP for Bethesda in something like 25 years and we know that they been thinking about doing a space game for at least over a decade, and that some initial preproduction started after fallout 4 but that the team really started ramping up production in 2017 and especially in 2018 after Fallout 76 was released. So with that in mind we’re looking at a solid 3, maybe 4 years of development time to release Starfield? If you go back even further with past Bethesda titles to fallout 76 in 2018, fallout 4 in 2015, skyrim in 2011 and fallout 3 in 2008, you see generally about a period of 3-4 years between major RPG releases from bethesda. So does that mean 3-4 years past Starfield we will see a release for The Elder Scrolls 6? Maybe.
But then there’s the issue of development. We know that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be a massive RPG for Bethesda if they want it to be a true Elder Scrolls title. Their experiences using Creation Engine 2 on Starfield might speed the process a bit, but I’d also imagine that TES 6 will have more features than even Starfield potentially. Todd Howard basically confirmed this as well, stating:
Every game will have some new suites of technology so Elder Scrolls 6 will have some additions on to Creation Engine 2 that that game is going to require.
This is where I begin to worry about the development timeframe for the next game in the Elder Scrolls series. If Starfield is already pushing the boundaries of what next generation technology can do and then the Elder Scrolls 6 is adding on to that, will the next TES entry take even longer to release? I think we could still be waiting for a long, long time, but at least we’ll have Starfield to tide us over until then!
