New World Spear & Life Staff Build: The Templar
Build Introduction
The Templar Build in New World is a powerful Solo player set up with great offensive combos, crowd control, speed and self-healing. This build is perfect for the Solo player looking to get out and explore in Aeternum and can handle even the most challenging content without assistance from other players including Corrupted Portals and World Bosses.
Best Attributes
The primary Attribute that you will want to max out on the Templar Build is Dexterity. Dex is the best attribute for our main weapon on this build and also grants many important passive milestones based on how much total Dexterity your character has access to, including bonus Critical Strike chance and Critical Damage.
A good secondary attribute that will benefit this build is Focus, which will improve our healing abilties and mana regeneration.
Finally, it’s recommend that players put some attribute points into Constution for the extra health and survivability – as little as 20 points placed at the beginning of the game makes a big difference!
Armor Choices
For Armor on the Templar Build I prefer the fast-paced, risk / reward playstyle that Light Armor brings, allowing you to quickly dodge in and out of combat. Not only is Light Armor great for mobility, it also gives us the best Healing and Damage of all Armor Types in New World.
To get the best Physical and Elemental resistance possible on a Light Armor build make sure to equip the following pieces:
- Head – Light
- Chest – Medium
- Gloves – Light
- Legs – Light
- Feet – Light
Remember, when looking for gear pieces for this build to focus on our Key Attributes: Dexterity and Focus. Some pieces with Constitution will also be good.
A good example of this is the Artificer Set shown below.
Primary Weapon
The Primary Weapon for the Templar build is the Spear. In New World, the Spear is a fantastic weapon choice for PVE and PVP content. This weapon excels at crowd control and is able to easily knock down or push back groups of enemies. Combined with Light Armor as mentioned previously, the Spear is a great choice for getting quickly in and out of combat, dishing out bursts of damage and then escaping before enemies can hit you back.
When looking for a high quality Spear, pay special attention to any Traits or Gems the weapon might have. I recommend:
Traits: Vicious – increases Critical Damage.
Gem: Gambit – adds damage while your stamina is not full.
Secondary Weapon
The Secondary Weapon for the Templar Build is going to be the Life Staff. This weapon is an amazing choice for anyone looking to go solo or explore as it provides easy, passive self-healing through a variety of heal over time and ground-based heals which will still heal you even while using your primary weapon.

Combat Basics
Damage
To deal damage on this build we will be using the Spear at a medium to close range. A good start to combat is either Vault Kick or Skewer, as both of these skills include a medium ranged gap-closer as part of their animations. Once you get used to the range you should be able to initiate combat with these abilities without taking damage. From there, the perfect Combo will be to use Sweep, upgraded to Coup De Grace. This will knock down enemies and apply a big burst of damage. If enemies survive this basic Combo you can dodge roll out of range and get a new angle of attack for a basic light or heavy attack combo.
Healing and Defense
Apply your ground effect heals such as Sacred Ground either before or during combat to provide tons of passive healing while you focus on dealing damage.
